- Note that this isn't a case of sour grapes, because I can run Netscape 2.0
- on my machine via ShapeShifter. But I don't, because it sucks Vienna sausages
- through a long section of garden hose.
- First, it's got that built-in e-mail program which doesn't have all the
- fatures that I've come to expect from a good one. Tough bananas, I can't
- replace it with a better one. Similarly, the built-in newsreader is pretty
- good, if rather confusing to use. (With one of the earlier betas, I had a
- hard time even getting a newsgroup list.) That nifty feature of MacOS and
- Windows which lets you re-size GUI elements is absolutely required, because
- it's so crowded, even on an 800x600 desktop screen. It's really too annoying
- to use seriously, though, because you're re-sizing it after reading each
- posting. And like the e-mail program, it's built-in, so I can't replace it
- with a better one.
- Oh, but that's not the worst of it, by any means! Then we get to the
- browser. Yes, the browser....
- That secure HTTP feature you like is just a joke. With that annoying
- requester that pops up to tell you that you're entering or leaving a "secure"
- area, I'm of the opinion that it's more a marketing ploy than an actual
- attempt at secure transactions. ("Buy Netscape, it gives you the illusion of
- security.") They use an inadequate number of bits, and key selection is not
- at all random. It was broken once, fairly quickly. Who's to say it doesn't
- have more flaws?
- Then there's the total joke of an HTML parser they use. Ye gawds this
- thing is full of bugs! It recognizes all manner of bad HTML, doesn't support
- all of HTML 2.0, and includes support for those horrid Netscape extensions. I
- would think that a person would want to understand HTML 2.0 fully, before
- trying to extend it. Not Netscape programmers, obviously, they don't seem to
- think like I do. Oh, and how's this for security: Another Netscape HTML
- extension that allows Web page authors to cause Netscape to send e-mail in
- your name without telling you? (I could make this message at least 3 times
- longer just by outlining all of the bad HTML extensions they've added.)
- Oh yeah, and all those security features in their Java implementation,
- which allow malicious programmers to do nasty things to your system. Well,
- they did fix that one, but doesn't that say something about their programming
- teams? Aside from that, Java is pretty cool. In fact, it's the only reason I
- ever use Netscape anymore. I'll only put up with a heap of dung if there's a
- diamond hidden in it.
- Then there's the issue of PNG support. All Amiga browsers support this
- format, which features smaller file sizes and better progressive display than
- GIF, some versions of Mosaic support it, as well as some other browsers.
- Netscape? Nope. Soon? Probably not.
- On my machine, it's AWeb. It's much faster than Netscape, supports almost
- the full HTML 2.0 spec, and *only* the HTML 2.0 spec (which is definitely a
- feature), with a few additional cool features. For those pages that are
- painful to browse because they make heavy use of Netscape extensions, or rely
- on Netscape's layout, there's IBrowse. (Then again, in the past two days I've
- checked out the Specialized and Roland Web sites, which for some unfathomable
- reason are done almost entirely in BLOCKQUOTE. Ugh. That's just painful to
- read, no matter what.)
- Yes, when I have the choice, AWeb comes in first, IBrowse second, and
- Netscape third.
